The Seaview Performing Arts Center for Education (known as SPACE throughout this blog) is located in Lower Puna in the Seaview subdivision off Red Road. Since its inception in 2006, SPACE has grown into, at least, a regional venue for young and old alike to take classes, visit the Saturday market, enjoy international performances and simply socialize. At best, it has become a “one of a kind” international venue for unique performances.

I began visiting SPACE  regularly when they had “Jazz Night” once per month. Tablecloth covered, candle lit tables created a “speak easy” atmosphere and local jazz groups lit up the stage sending great vibes throughout the community. A friend turned me on to the “Cirque de Soleil” type performances lined up at SPACE throughout the year by local and international performers, and I was “hooked”!

The Saturday Farmer’s Market from 8am to 11:30am provides Lower Puna with bakers, gardeners, artists, craftsfolk, candlestick makers, massage  therapists and hairstylists, to name a few, sharing their wares and expertise. Several booths offer fresh, aromatic breakfast foods made to order right before your very eyes. Their market has grown exponentially since it began and best of all, it’s local and convenient.

Probably the most important aspect of SPACE, in this writers’ opinion, is the service it provides to area children. It’s a place for children to gain physical skills and awareness through “circus play”. Tumbling, acrobatics, balance skills by plate spinning and twirling and creative play is the basic theme of the classes presented and taught at SPACE by experienced professionals.

Weekly classes for people of all ages provide residents with the opportunity to learn everything from dance to acrobatics and tumbling at reasonable rates. SPACE also rents out their facility for private venues and educators can offer workshops here.

If you haven’t experienced SPACE I suggest you check it out soon. Sign up for the monthly newsletter to see what may be upcoming to suit your interest.  Or simply pack a lunch early Saturday morning, plan a leisurely drive down Red Road and stop by the market for a bite of breakfast and check it out. It will be well worth your time.

Directions: Take Rt. 130 to left on Rt. 137 (Kalapana-Kapoho Rd. or Red Road). Follow for 4 miles to Seaview Estates subdivision and turn left onto the main “drag”. Go up about a mile to the big “hand” pointing left that has SPACE on it and turn left. Follow to the entrance on the left. There are two parking areas or you may park on the side of the street. Enjoy!

  1. I was not aware S.P.A.C.E. existed, Anna…..mahalo for spreading the word…. Seems as if your little area of paradise is teeming with activity!

  2. Many people still don’t. I signed my little granddaughter, Lucy, up for “Circus Play” classes and she has really enjoyed it (probably not as much as her parents and I enjoy watching HER!). It’s great creative playtime and educational as well.
